House Names
We are thinking ahead to the day we move in to the new house, and wondering what name we could give it. I found a database with Melbourne house-names in it, and have extracted these names into a complete list. These names are from the late 1800's and early 1900's. We are not sure that we really like many of these names, so we are still thinking of something creative that reflects both of us in some way.
As an aside, I read that house names were very common once, but when the telephone system was introduced, a house numbering system was needed for the phone directory. Not sure how true that is.

In our neighborhood (which is very close knit) houses are often referred to by then name of the former owners. "Oh, yeah, they live in the Anderson house..." I think it would be neat if naming houses was still popular.
On a related point, I think it is fun to see what people name their houseblog...kinda a modern equivalent, perhaps!
I agree, I wish more houses had names. I had a look at your list, a lot of them seem to be named after places in England and Scotland. I'm guessing perhaps they were named for places where people's families came from, or their favourite holiday place as a child? Maybe you guys could come up with your own name in the same spirit as that, so you're being true to the past in essence, but it's unique to you.

Enjoy your home in Melbourne. We're back in the States after 5 years there. What a wonderful city!
